Finder reports app is "damaged and can't be opened"

We've had this error reported by some Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) users.


1) If you have an older version of Mountain Lion, run the App Store updater to ensure that you have the latest 10.8, which is 10.8.5.

2) If the problem continues, go to the Apple menu -> System Preferences and pick "Security & Privacy". Click the padlock icon to unlock the settings. Then set "Allow apps downloaded from:" to "Anywhere".

3) If the problem still happens once you've picked Anywhere, the app may actually be damaged. Follow the link in your registration email to go to the Ecamm Customer Center page. Re-download the app, picking the option to download a DMG file rather than a ZIP file.
