Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the system requirements for the BT-1?
A: The BT-1 requires a Mac equipped with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR or better, running Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or higher. Bluetooth+EDR became standard on most Macs starting in 2005. To check to see if your Mac is equipped with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR capabilities, we suggest using everymac.com.
Q: Does the BT-1 work with an iPhone or iPad?
A: No. After carefully reviewing this, it was determined that because of the limitations of the operating system and the device's Bluetooth sub-system, we feel that it would not provide a satisfactory user experience.
Q: Why do I want a wireless camera?
A: While most new Macs have built-in cameras, these fixed cameras can't be aimed. The BT-1 can be placed anywhere: on a shelf, at the end of a table facing a group of people, facing out a window, or even passed around a room during a multi-person conference.
Q: What is Bluetooth wireless technology? How is it different from Wi-Fi?
A: Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology designed to connect devices such as keyboards, mice, headsets, and cell phones. While it doesn't reach as far as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth wireless technology is much easier to configure because it is peer-to-peer and doesn't require a network or router. Your Mac automatically discovers and pairs with your BT-1. Additionally, since it doesn't use as much power as Wi-Fi, the BT-1 can run on batteries for up to 4 hours.
Q: How does it work and what can I do with it on my Mac?
A: The BT-1 shows up as a camera source in almost any Mac program designed for using video cameras. This includes iChat, Skype, Photo Booth, Yahoo, QuickTime Player Pro, and video chat websites such as Ustream, YouTube and Stickam.
Q: Can I get the BT-1 in my country?
A: BT-1 is currently available via online ordering shipping from the United States to selected countries. It may also be available from a reseller in your region.
Q: Are drivers required?
A: Yes. There is a simple one-time installation process. Driver software is available here.
Q: It's prompting me for a passkey. What should I enter?
A: The device's default Bluetooth passkey is 0000.
Q: How do I turn on/off the BT-1?
A: To turn it on or off, hold down the power button for 1 second. You will see the indicator flash for a second indicator that the power has been successfully turned on or off.
Q: Do I have to turn off the BT-1 when I'm done using it?
A: Turning it off manually is optional. The BT-1 will turn itself off automatically after 20 minutes of inactivity.
Q: Is there Windows support for this product?
A: Not at this time. It's Mac-only.
Q: Is there a microphone too?
A: Yes, the BT-1 has a microphone. It will show up as a stereo audio input on your Mac.
Q: What else is included with the BT-1?
A: Your BT-1 order will include a mini-tripod and a USB cable for charging through your Mac's USB port.
Q: How is the BT-1 powered?
A: It uses an internal, rechargeable, (included, non-removable) battery and recharges over a USB connection, much like an iPod or iPhone.
Q: For how long can the BT-1 be used before recharging is necessary?
A: A fully charged battery yields between 4 and 5 hours of wireless "talk time". Fully charging the battery takes about 2 hours.
Q: Can it be plugged into power instead of using a battery?
A: Yes, you can use any 5 volt mini-USB wall charger (often included with many cell phones and Bluetooth headsets). You can purchase a wall-charger separately.
Q: What is the wireless range? How far away from my Mac can I place the BT-1?
A: The BT-1 range varies from 10 to 30 feet (3 to 10 meters). Range will vary based on factors such as intervening walls, large metal objects, and interference from other devices. Range will also vary based on the type of Mac you're using. For example, the Bluetooth radio inside a desktop Mac is more powerful than a portable Mac.
Q: How can I mount the BT-1?
A: There's a standard sized ¼-inch threaded tripod mount on the bottom, which can be attached to any tripod.
Q: What are the specifications of the video stream?
A: The maximum video resolution is 640x480 (VGA). The frame rate is 15 frames per second.
Q: How is the picture quality?
A: The BT-1 uses the H.264 video codec, resulting in a high quality picture that under certain conditions can look even better than the built-in iSight. Due to the nature of H.264, your results may vary based on lighting conditions, rapid motion in the shot, and the complexity of the picture.
Q: Does the the BT-1 have auto-focus?
A: The BT-1 has a fixed focus lens with no moving parts. The image is always in focus from between 10 inches and infinity without the need to be adjusted.
Q: Can I run more than one BT-1 on the same computer?
A: Only one BT-1 camera can be run simultaneously on the same computer. It's easy to switch between multiple BT-1's, but you can only receive video from one at a time. You can use the BT-1 at the same time as other cameras such as the built-in iSight.
Q: Is the BT-1 waterproof? Can it be used outside?
A: No, it's designed for indoor use only.
Q: Can the BT-1 be used for home security?
A: While designed as a webcam, the BT-1 can also be powered from a wall socket using a USB power adapter, and used in conjunction with security software (not provided) to monitor a room.
Q: Can I record video using the BT-1?
A: Yes, you can use Mac software such as Photo Booth, QuickTime Player Pro or QuickTime Broadcaster to record video. See out list of suggested applications for more info.
Q: Can the wireless signal penetrate walls?
A: The Bluetooth signal can penetrate walls and doors, but this will decrease the distance that the signal can travel.
Q: Is the wireless connection secure?
A: Yes. Bluetooth technology incorporates AES encryption, providing industry standard wireless data security.
Q: What is the camera's angle of view?
A: The BT-1's lens has 66 degree angle of view.
Q: How will I setup the camera with my computer?
A: Simply install the drivers, turn on the BT-1, and launch your favorite video chat program. The BT-1 will be automatically detected and you will be prompted to enter the pairing passkey.
Q: How do I remove the BT-1 software from my Mac?
A: Download and run the BT-1 installer package. You will see an option to uninstall.
